Pour la troisième fois consécutive, le Honduras et le Mexique représenteront la région Amérique du Nord, centrale et Caraïbes au Tournoi Olympique de Football Masculin. Comme à Londres 2012 et à Rio 2016, les Mexicains se présenteront sur la scène olympique en tant que champions de la CONCACAF.
El Tri tentera d'imiter la génération des Oribe Peralta, Marco Fabian, Raul Jimenez, Hector Herrera et autres Javier Aquino, médaillée d'or à Wembley en 2012. C'était la première fois qu'une sélection de la CONCACAF terminait sur la première marche du podium.
Le Honduras a quant à lui décroché son billet pour Tokyo en battant les États-Unis 2-1 en demi-finale du tournoi. Les Stars & Stripes manqueront le rendez-vous olympique pour la troisième fois consécutive, tandis que les Catrachos confirment qu'il faut compter avec eux à ce niveau. Dans l'autre demi-finale, le Mexique a battu le Canada 2-0.

El Tri a donné le ton très tôt dans ces qualifications. Grâce notamment à un triplé de Sebastian Cordova, les futurs vainqueurs de la compétition ont entamé leur campagne par une victoire 4-1 sur la République dominicaine, dont c'était la première participation au tournoi.
