Cinq rencontres étaient au programme de la quatrième journée de qualifications sud-américaines pour la Coupe du Monde de la FIFA, Qatar 2022. L'Argentine et le Brésil, vainqueurs, continuent à faire la course en tête, tandis que l'Équateur confirme sa bonne forme avec une éclatante victoire contre la Colombie.

Uruguay 0-2 Brésil
Sans Neymar, le Brésil a magnifiquement négocié un déplacement difficile à Montévidéo et enregistré une quatrième victoire (0-2) en quatre matches dans ces éliminatoires. Avec un but chacun en première mi-temps, Arthur et Richarlison ont été les bourreaux des Uruguayens, qui se retrouvent à la cinquième place avec six points, et devront en plus se passer d'Edinson Cavani, exclu en seconde période, pour le prochain match, face à l'Argentine en mars 2021.
Le Brésil réalise son meilleur départ en éliminatoires de Coupe du Monde depuis 51 ans, quand Pelé et sa bande avaient également débuté leur campagne pour Mexique 1970 par six victoires. Depuis l'arrivée de Tite en 2016, le Brésil est invaincu en qualification de Coupe du Monde, avec 14 victoires et deux nuls, le tout avec 42 buts marqués pour cinq encaissés.

Pérou 0-2 Argentine
L'Argentine aussi s'est imposée à l'extérieur lors de cette quatrième journée, un succès net contre le Pérou (0-2) qui conforte sa deuxième place avec 10 points sur 12 possibles. Nicolas Gonzalez et Lautaro Martinez ont fait la différence en première mi-temps, tandis que Lionel Messi est monté en gamme après la pause sans pour autant concrétiser sa forme éblouissante au tableau d'affichage. En six matches de qualification pour la Coupe du Monde contre les Péruviens, Messi n'a jamais réussi à faire trembler les filets...

Paraguay 2-2 Bolivie
La Bolivie a enfin marqué son premier point dans cette campagne, avec un nul (2-2) arraché au Paraguay, à Asuncion. L'hôte a ouvert le score par Angel Romero, mais a craqué deux fois avant la pause sur des buts signés Marcelo Martins et Boris Cespedes. L'Albirroja a jeté toutes ses forces dans la bataille après la pause, et a réussi à égaliser par Kaku. Invaincus, les Paraguayens n'ont cependant que six points en quatre journées.

L'Équateur a signé le carton de cette quatrième journée à domicile contre des Colombiens (6-1) en mauvaise posture avec une deuxième lourde défaite consécutive après le cinglant revers concédé à domicile face à l'Uruguay (0-3). La Tri avait déjà quatre longueurs d'avance après 40 minutes de jeu grâce à Robert Arboleda, Angel Mena, Michael Estrada et Xavier Arreaga.
James Rodriguez a réduit l'écart avant la pause, mais les Cafeteros ont à nouveau multiplié les approximations défensives en seconde période, craquant à deux reprises face à Gonzalo Plata et Pervis Estupinan.
Venezuela 2-1 Chili
Chez eux, les Vénézuéliens ont récolté leurs premiers points dans ces éliminatoires grâce à Salomon Rondon qui a inscrit le but de la victoire à dix minutes du coup de sifflet final. C'est la première fois de son histoire que le Venezuela parvient à battre la Roja chez lui en éliminatoires de la Coupe du Monde, et c'est seulement le deuxième succès de la Vinotinto en 15 rencontres entre les deux pays (11 défaites, deux nuls).
