La République de Corée a remporté une victoire qui n’a pas fini de faire parler. Malgré leur triomphe 2-0 sur l’Allemagne, les Guerriers Taeguk n’ont pas réussi à accrocher l’une des deux premières places du Groupe F. Mais ce résultat marque l'histoire de la compétition. Pour le tenant du titre, l’aventure en Coupe du Monde de la FIFA 2018™ s’arrête dès la phase de groupes.
En première mi-temps, comme on pouvait s’y attendre, les Allemands prennent le jeu à leur compte. De leur côté, les Sud-Coréens misent sur des contres pour porter le danger dans le camp adverse. Aucune des deux équipes ne parvient à se montrer menaçante, la seule situation chaude survenant suite à un coup franc direct frappé par Koo Jacheol. Manuel Neuer laisse rebondir le tir du milieu de terrain sud-coréen devant son but, mais il parvient à dégager le ballon en catastrophe avant l’intervention de Son Heungmin.
En seconde période, c’est au tour des champions du monde de passer près d’ouvrir le score. Le gardien sud-coréen Jo Hyeonwoo réalise une intervention spectaculaire sur une tête de Leon Goretzka. Dans la foulée, Timo Werner menace à son tour le but des Guerriers Taeguk, suite à une bonne combinaison entre Mesut Özil et Marco Reus. Au fil des minutes, la Mannschaft se découvre de plus en plus et les Sud-Coréens ne se font pas prier pour exploiter les espaces dans la défense allemande. Malheureusement, ils se montrent souvent trop gourmands dans la conclusion. C’est finalement un défenseur, Kim Younggwon, qui lance la République de Corée sur la voie d’une victoire historique, avant que Son ne double la mise dans les dernières secondes du temps additionnel.

L’Allemagne a dominé ce duel entre le champion du monde en titre et le challenger asiatique, mais la République de Corée a enfin pu montrer ce qu’elle valait vraiment dans cette Coupe du Monde. Les Guerriers Taeguk ont fait preuve d’un courage énorme sur ce match. Malheureusement, ils ont une nouvelle fois commis trop d’erreurs dans le dernier geste. En dépit de ce criant manque de réalisme, ils peuvent fêter un succès dont on se souviendra longtemps.

Pour la troisième fois de suite (!), le tenant du titre quitte la compétition à l’issue de la phase de groupes. Cet échec cuisant s’explique autant par la méforme des cadres de l’équipe que par un invraisemblable manque de réalisme. À chacune de ses sorties, l’Allemagne a dominé la possession de balle, mais elle a aussi démontré d'inquiétantes lacunes au niveau de la créativité et du sang-froid.
