Vainqueur 0-2 de la Serbie au Stade du Spartak, le Brésil s’adjuge la première place du Groupe E. La Seleçao affrontera le Mexique en huitième de finale, à Samara. Les Sud-Américains bouclent leur parcours avec sept points en trois matches. De leur côté, les Serbes n’ont pas réussi à remporter la victoire qui leur aurait permis de prolonger leur séjour en Russie.
Les hommes de Tite ont pris l’avantage à la 36ème minute, sur une magnifique ouverture en profondeur de Philippe Coutinho. Lancé dans le dos de la défense, Paulinho s’est fendu d’un joli lob pour battre Vladimir Stojkovic, sorti à sa rencontre. La Serbie a tout tenté pour égaliser, sans se montrer suffisamment tranchante. Ses derniers espoirs de qualification se sont envolés à la 68ème minute, lorsque Thiago Silva a doublé la mise en reprenant d’un coup de tête rageur un corner tiré par Neymar.

Les Serbes espéraient un miracle dans ce match. Il n’a pas eu lieu, mais les Orlovi n’ont pas à rougir de leur performance face à une sélection brésilienne qui a livré ce soir son meilleur match depuis le début du tournoi. L’envie était là, tout comme le potentiel. Cette jeune équipe de Serbie a fait preuve d’une grande solidarité, notamment en seconde période. Ce soir, elle est éliminée mais elle peut légitimement croire en son avenir.

Depuis le début de la semaine, les favoris ont énormément souffert. Le Brésil a donc tout lieu de se féliciter de sa performance, notamment en première mi-temps. La Seleçao a longtemps dicté le tempo du match, même s'il faut reconnaître qu’elle traversait une période difficile lorsque Thiago Silva a sauté plus haut que tout le monde pour inscrire le second but.
