What is the volunteer programme of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™?
It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for thousands of people from Russia and all over the world to participate in the organising of the 2018 FIFA World Cup™ and the FIFA Confederations Cup 2017 and to contribute to the biggest sport festival in the world. The key elements of the programme are: volunteer recruitment, training and management during the events, as well as organising the network of Volunteer Centres in the Host Cities.
How many volunteers will be able to take part in the 2018 FIFA World Cup and the FIFA Confederations Cup 2017?The estimated number of volunteers needed for the FIFA Confederations Cup 2017 is about 5,500 people and 15,000 people for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
What is a Volunteer Centre?
It is a dedicated centre based in universities located in the Host Cities and certified by the Russia 2018 Local Organising Committee (LOC). These Volunteer Centres organise the recruitment and training of volunteers in the Host Cities for the FIFA Confederations Cup 2017 and the 2018 FIFA World Cup. There are 15 centres – five in Moscow and one in every other Host City.
When did the registration process take place?
Applications for both FIFA Confederations Cup 2017 and 2018 FIFA World Cup on FIFA.com started on 1 June 2016 and finished on 30 December 2016.
Are there any restrictions for volunteer candidates?
The only limit for volunteers is age. FIFA Confederations Cup 2017 volunteers should turn 18 years old by 10 May 2017 and FIFA World Cup volunteers by 10 May 2018.
The volunteer programme is open to everyone regardless of gender, religion, disability, race or sexual orientation.
How will the selection of volunteers be organised?
Selection will be organised online and face-to-face. Candidates will be invited to participate in online tests (to get more information about their analytical skills, personal qualities, and command of English). After that, successful candidates (those who passed the tests) will proceed to interview at his or her relevant volunteer centre.
How can you improve your chances of being selected as a volunteer?
All candidates will be treated equally during the selection process. However, candidate’s chances for successful selection can raise if he or she has good command in foreign languages, volunteer experience or special education that is necessary for the specific function.
How will the volunteers training be organised and how long will it take a volunteer to complete the training programme?
Volunteers will be trained at the Volunteer Centres. The general course will take 1-2 days, but the detailed schedule depends on the function.
Can I become a volunteer if I do not speak English?
The FIFA Confederations Cup 2017 and 2018 FIFA World Cup volunteer should have good command of English in order to pass the selection test successfully. However, the necessary level of knowledge depends on the function. The highest demands are in the functions of Language Services and Team Services. Nevertheless, if you do not speak English, but you have a good knowledge of another foreign language, such as German or French, your application will also be considered.
Will the Organising Committee pay for accommodation and meals for the volunteers in the Host Cities of the World Cup?
Volunteer services will include a unique volunteer uniform, free public transportation and meals during shifts. However, if you are not from the tournament Host City, you will need to pay for your transfer to the city and accommodation.
How many times do I have to come to training if there is no volunteer centre in my city?
Training schedules depend on an individual's function. Usually general volunteer training takes 1-2 days. Therefore, it is just one journey to the city to a volunteer centre. Functional and venue-specific trainings will be organised on the sites of the tournament right before the volunteer’s first shift. In addition, some volunteers could be invited to take online training.
If I volunteer, can I see the opening and closing ceremony of the Confederations Cup and World Cup as well as football matches at the tournament?
Volunteers will have different functions and be in different locations throughout the event. Only a select few will be inside the competition areas or involved in preparation for the opening and closing ceremonies. At the same time, even in the competition areas, volunteers will be focused on their tasks and not on watching the competition. The only way for volunteers to watch the ceremonies or matches would be when he or she is not working their shifts and to buy a ticket for the event. Please note that volunteers will not receive any special accreditation or tickets to watch the competitions.
